A Critical Review of Studies on Classification of Chinese Words — In Consideration of the Characteristics of Modern Chinese Language and the Needs of Chinese Language Teaching

Modern Chinese is, to a certain sense, a hybrid language, mixing ancient and modern elements as well as encompassing features of northern and southern dialects. This is the reason why it has been difficult to apply grammatical rules to systemically explain various linguistic phenomena. Instead, current Chinese grammar systems are often found to be neither appropriate nor applicable in language classrooms. The classification of words has shared such kind of problem. This paper presents a critical review of studies on classification of Chinese words from the perspectives of linguistic features of the modern Chinese language and the needs of language teaching.
