Abstract

Chinese vocabulary teaching has not been effective. It seems that it is the students’ task to master the numerous words. The focus of teaching has been laid on the individual character recognition at the beginning level and on the distinction of synonyms at the advanced level. However, students are still struggling with how to express themselves appropriately even at the advanced level. In this article, latest studies about Yuti (a register of language) will be introduced. Its implications for Written Chinese vocabulary instruction at each level are discussed.
