Abstract

Chinese students in a private high school in San Francisco claimed that they have been micro aggressed in terms of gender and sexuality. This study identifies four types of gender and sexual microaggressions in Chinese language classrooms: Chinese teachers’ lack of knowledge on gender and sexual issues; Chinese teacher’s inappropriate instructions in classrooms; little content of gender spectrum or sexual orientation in the textbook; finally, the rare usage of LGDBQ related Chinese expressions in everyday life. This study provides practical suggestions and solutions to prevent committing microaggressions in the future.
