Language Features Influencing Readability of Extra-class Reading Materials

Abstract

The development of students’ language proficiency depends on extra-class reading. Besides the content, the language demand of such materials needs be properly controlled. Due to lack of objective evaluation tool, the language demand is often judged subjectively relying on the teacher’s experience. This study explores an objective method of using language features and suggests a readability formula for Chinese as a second language.
